EL SEGUNDO, CA. When it comes to scoring some of the biggest hits in popular music, few names stand taller than that of independent arranger / producer Benjamin Wright. Wright, whose orchestrations have helped define the sound of countless artists, including Michael Jackson, Earth, Wind & Fire, OutKast, Justin Timberlake, and Aretha Franklin, knows better than most that the right microphone makes all the difference between a performance, and an unforgettable performance. So when it comes to capturing the full-bodied richness of an orchestral string section, Wright counts on his MXL V69 Mogami Edition tube microphones to get the job done.
Wright recently took delivery of eight V69s and was quick to share his enthusiasm. "I bought these mics to use on strings," said Wright, "as I do a lot of string work. For years, I've worked with a number of high-end microphones, but after hearing the V69, I knew this was the microphone I wanted on my strings. When it comes to capturing strings, quantity equals quality. Unfortunately, you don't always get twenty violins on a record date, and that's precisely why you need really good microphones |

like the V69. These mics are so warm, they give a small string section a tremendously full and rich sound-and that's gold for me."
Currently, Wright is working on a forthcoming CD project for New Jersey-based artist Jean Baylor and her husband/producer Marcus Baylor, best known as the drummer for the Yellowjackets jazz quartet. Sessions have been taking place at Fire House Recording Studios in Pasadena, CA, with Geoff Gillette engineering along with Wright's longtime engineer Reggie Dozier manning the console. Wright described his experience on a recent session, "I had about twenty-five strings, and I generally mic two players for each stand. We used them on the violins, the violas, the celli, and even the contra bass. The mics performed better than I had ever hoped for. The V69s were just unbelievable."
Jean Baylor's album is slated for release in July 2005 on the Lighthouse Music label. The album title is Testimony: My Life Story.
